Charlie Frank Wood

Charlie Frank Wood, Chief Master Sergeant, Retired Charlie Frank Wood, 98, died at home on March 23rd, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife, Flo, and they shared 71 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter, Martha Morris, and son, Judge Phillip (Marsha) Wood; six grandchildren: Robin (Paul) Gillikin, Scott (Alison) Morris, Emily (Drew) Smith, Doctor Laura Alise McDaniel, Rachel (Jordan) Daniels, and Matthew (Katherine) Wood. He also has eleven great-grandchildren: Timothy, Anna, Jacob, Porter, William, Brody, Sam, Charles Tucker, Lilly, Baylor, and Charlotte. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings. He was born in Roanoke, Alabama on April 24th, 1921. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II he served in the 86th Bomber Squadron as part of the 47th Bomber Group, where he saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. He served with the 86th Bomber Squadron until the end of World War II, when he was discharged from active duty. He reenlisted in the United States Air Force in 1947 and retired with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in 1973. He also served in Okinawa, and then Tan Son Knut Air Base during the Vietnam War. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he owned and operated W &C Heating and Air Conditioning until 1996. He enjoyed playing golf, playing until age 96, and was an avid reader of Westerns. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Prattville and a Mason. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a true friend of many who always enjoyed hearing his war stories and of his life growing up during the Great Depression. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be missed by all. A private family service will be held on March 27th, 2020 at Prattville Memory Gardens. Attendance is limited to family due to the coronavirus. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to First Baptist Church, Prattville, Alabama, or to The Wounded Warrior Project.
