David M. Bufkin

April 2, 1962 – June 26, 2015 AUTAUGAVILLE, ALABAMA – David M. Bufkin, 53, died June 26, 2015 after a nine-month battle with Leukemia and a successful Bone Marrow Transplant at UAB on March 27. His son, David Michael was his donor. David set the Unit record walking 62 miles in twenty-one days during his hospitalization. He made a valiant effort in his fight after transplant to recover and return to his home and his beloved cows on his farm. He died Friday afternoon at 5:10 p.m. surrounded by his family and friends in the BMT Unit from GVHD, Graft Versus Host Disease, a risk that comes with any bone marrow transplant. Born April 2, 1962, he was the son of Noah and Marie Bufkin of Agricola, Mississippi. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Teresa and his two children, David Michael (28) and Michelle (21). David was also survived by his sister, Kelly Underwood (Ronnie) of Agricola, MS and their children, Whitney Franklin (Phillip) of Cody, Wyoming, Anthony Underwood (Chelsea) and Caden of Agricola, MS.; his nephew and niece, Mica and Madison Bufkin of Wilmer, AL; his sister-in-law, Nikki Bufkin (Sam) and Ryan of Mobile, AL; his sister-in-law, Theresa Rohm and her children, Tyler and Madison of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother-in-law David Rohm (Cindy) and their children, Jessica and Travis of Mobile, AL; and his father-in-law, George Rohm, Sr. David was preceded in death by his younger brother, Daymon, his brother-in-law, Buddy, and his mother-in-law, Donna Rohm. David graduated from Mississippi State University in 1985 with a degree in Civil Engineering and worked for one year with the Mississippi State Department of Transportation. He then moved to Lamar County, Alabama as an EIT and assistant to the County Engineer until he passed his Professional Engineer’s Test. He then moved his young family to Autauga County in October, 1990 where he became the youngest County Engineer hired in the state of Alabama at that time. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Naresh Bellum and his staff at the Montgomery Cancer Center, Prattville office for their assistance with his diagnosis and initial treatment of his Leukemia, along with all the wonderful nurses of 5N at Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery. Also, many thanks to Dr. Uma Borate and Brittany Hamby at the Kirklin Clinic at UAB, where he participated in a clinical trial to research a new chemotherapy drug and to reach remission and prepare for his transplant. A heartfelt thank you goes to the wonderful doctors and nurses and all the medical professionals at the BMT Unit, West Pavilion, UAB who loved and supported us as we spent the last three months of our lives in the Inpatient and Outpatient Units. We would also like to thank the Homewood Church of Christ for their Apartment Ministry which provided David and Teresa with HAFH (Home Away From Home) from April 15 through June 27 at absolutely no charge. David was an avid outdoorsman who proudly displayed a sign in his office “Born to Hunt, Forced to Work”. He left behind his “hunting brother, David Gentry” whom he traveled around the country with on many interesting and successful hunting adventures. David was even more successful with his Bow than he was with his rifle when it came to Elk hunting. He was a charter member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Central Alabama Chapter. He was a former officer of the Autauga County Chapter of Bowhunters of Alabama. He loved spending time in God’s creations and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. His passion was introducing to others to his love of hunting. A celebration of his life will be observed Friday, July 3, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the Worship Center at First Baptist Church, 138 South Washington Street, Prattville, Alabama with internment at Rocky Hill Cemetery in Autaugaville, Alabama. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Prattville Memorial Chapel 841 Fairview Avenue, Prattville, Alabama.
