George L. Gorey

Mr. George L. Gorey, 63, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at his home in Prattville,AL. George graduated from Jacksonville High School and attended Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL. He retired from Russo Corporation where he had worked for 35 years. Mr. Gorey was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Geraldine Angel Gorey. Mr. Gorey is survived by his wife Rebecca Green Gorey, and sons Macon McCaffery Green (Huntsville, AL) and Alexander McKay Gorey (Tuscaloosa, AL), sisters Peggy (Tony) Nunnelley (Anniston,AL), Lyndean (Mike) Haynes (Salida,CO), sister-in-law Laura Green (Jimmy) Ashcraft (Hueytown,AL), nieces Ashlyn and Kelsey Haynes, Denna (Jason) Joiner, nephew Jacob Ashcraft, great-niece Lauren Joiner, and great–nephew Hayden Joiner. George was a warm, kind-hearted man who was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He treasured his friends and all his life maintained the friends he had in school growing up in Jacksonville. He was well known for his good humor and easy smile. He loved to make others laugh and enjoyed making life fun for others. He was beloved by his son, Alex, his stepson, Macon, and his wife, Becky Green Gorey. He made a point each day of doing things for his family and was genuine and thoughtful in his devotion to his family. He loved the outdoors. He loved canoeing and kayaking. Although he owned a large piece of land in Calhoun County, he would never allow hunting on his property because he loved nature and could not stand the thought of anyone killing an animal. A true conservationist, he loved gardening, birding, and everything nature had to offer. To honor Mr. Gorey's lifetime love of nature and outdoor activities the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the maintenance of hiking trails enjoyed by George. These include the Pinhoti, Dugger Mountain, and Cheaha State Park. Donations can be made by visiting the website WildSouth.org.
